Stall of fresh fish and prawns on ice, garnished with lemon, at l'Estéou Marseille.

Pointe Rouge · Marseille 13008

The catch of the day, as fresh as the morning tide

At l'Estéou, the day's menu is decided on the harbour. Depending on the catch landed at Pointe Rouge, we grill sea bream, sea bass, red mullet or octopus to order — and serve them facing the Mediterranean.

The tide on your plate

A menu that changes with the catch

There is no 'catch of the day' written in advance here. Every morning, whatever the Pointe Rouge boats bring in decides what you'll find on the menu: a fine sea bream, a line-caught sea bass, a few red mullet or an octopus to cook slowly.

The fish arrives whole, never frozen, and goes to the kitchen just as it is. We fillet it, grill it, plate it — freshness as its only signature, never hiding the produce under a sauce.

What makes the difference

Why our catch of the day tastes the way it does

1

Landed in the morning

The fish comes straight from the Pointe Rouge boats, landed the same day, never frozen.

2

Grilled to order

On the plancha or the grill, cooked to order, finished with a drizzle of olive oil and a few herbs.

3

In season

The menu follows the Mediterranean: what's good right now, with respect for the seasons and the resource.

From harbour to table

A few hundred metres between the boat and your plate

Pointe Rouge is a genuine fishing harbour as much as a beach. Our fish don't travel for miles: they go from the nets to our kitchen within the morning, with no middleman and no cold storage.

We owe this short circuit to the local fishermen we work with every week. It's what lets us promise a fish that really is the catch of the day — and not just on the chalkboard. Notre blog vous aide à apprendre à reconnaître un poisson frais.

Vieux-Port or Pointe Rouge

Eating fish as close as it gets to the boats

We're often asked: for fish in Marseille, is the Vieux-Port or Pointe Rouge the better choice? The Vieux-Port has its charm, its buzz and its terraces in the heart of the city. Pointe Rouge plays a different card: a genuine neighbourhood fishing harbour, just a few hundred metres from our kitchen.

No detour through the city here: the boats come in close by and the fish goes from the nets to the kitchen within the morning. It's this short circuit, further south and quieter, that gives l'Estéou its true catch of the day — served facing the sea, with the calanques for a horizon.

The l'Estéou spirit

The sea, simply, the Marseille way

A whole fish, some lemon, a glass of chilled white and the horizon of the calanques: at l'Estéou, the catch of the day needs no dressing up. It's Mediterranean cooking at its truest — the produce, the southern light and the time for a proper meal.

In the kitchen

Grilled, in a soup or with a homemade aïoli

Depending on the catch and your mood, the catch of the day comes in many forms:

We most often serve it as grilled fish, fish soup, homemade aïoli or bouillabaisse. So many ways to find, on the plate, the same Mediterranean that laps against our terrace.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 'catch of the day' at l'Estéou?

It's the fish caught that very morning by the Pointe Rouge boats and offered on the menu according to the tide. It changes every day: sea bream, sea bass, red mullet, pandora or octopus, depending on what the sea has given.

Is the fish fresh or frozen?

Always fresh. The catch of the day arrives whole, landed in the morning, and is never frozen. It's precisely this short circuit with the local fishermen that makes the difference.

How is the catch of the day prepared?

Most often grilled or on the plancha, cooked to order and finished with a drizzle of olive oil and herbs. Depending on the catch, it can also go into a fish soup, a bouillabaisse, or be served with our homemade aïoli.

Can I know the catch of the day in advance?

Hardly, and that's the point: the menu is decided on the harbour according to the catch. The best is to call +33 6 02 05 65 46 on the day, or let the day's suggestion guide you when you arrive.

Do I need to book to be sure of getting the catch of the day?

The catch of the day sells out fast, especially at weekends and on the terrace. We recommend booking and, if you like, mentioning your wish for fish when you reserve.

Is it better to eat fish at the Vieux-Port or Pointe Rouge?

It depends on the mood you're after. The Vieux-Port offers the buzz of the city centre; Pointe Rouge, a genuine neighbourhood fishing harbour further south, facing the sea. At l'Estéou, the boats come in a few hundred metres away: the fish goes from harbour to plate within the morning, short-circuit, with no detour through the city. For a quiet catch of the day facing the calanques, Pointe Rouge makes a strong case.
