Seafood · Pointe Rouge

A seafood restaurant in Marseille, right by the sea

At Pointe Rouge, l'Estéou serves seafood platters, shellfish and crustaceans in tune with the daily catch, a stone's throw from the water.

The spirit of the sea

The seafood platter, a Mediterranean pause

At l'Estéou, seafood isn't a fixed menu but a daily rendez-vous with the tide. Oysters, brown crab, prawns, whelks and shellfish are plated to order, depending on what the sea offers that very day.

It is all enjoyed on the terrace at 1 Avenue de la Pointe Rouge, in the 8th district of Marseille — a platter to share, a glass of chilled white and the Mediterranean right in front of you.

What makes the difference at l'Estéou

In tune with the sea

Settle onto the terrace as the sun drops over the bay. For the length of a platter, the table becomes a stopover: salt, lemon, sea spray and the gentle lapping of Pointe Rouge nearby.

How we serve seafood

Freshness first

Our crustaceans and shellfish arrive with the tides. What matters is the day's produce — never the other way around.

The right touch

We shuck, plate and season with restraint, letting the sea and the Mediterranean speak for themselves.

Feet by the water

A shared platter, a glass of chilled white and the sea before you: the whole spirit of Pointe Rouge.

Fresh seafood, at the heart of Pointe Rouge

Eating seafood in Marseille means rediscovering the honest taste of the Mediterranean. At l'Estéou, shellfish and crustaceans round out a cuisine of the sea where fish is delivered and prepared every morning, with respect for the produce.

Whether it's a platter for two, a family meal or a craving for the sea after the beach, our team builds your plate around the day's catch and your appetite — no fuss, always with a smile.

Choosing well

How to spot genuinely fresh seafood

A platter is judged before the first bite. These are the markers we apply in the kitchen every day, and that you can check for yourself once the table is set.

Our fresh fish, prepared every morning
  • A line-up that changes

A platter built around the daily catch cannot be identical all year round. Here, what goes on it follows whatever the sea gives that very day.

  • Tightly closed shellfish

A live oyster, clam or mussel closes at the slightest touch. A shell left open has no place on a platter.

  • A clean sea smell

Fresh seafood smells of seawater and greenery, nothing more. A strong or sharp smell is the signal to walk away.

  • Plated to order

A platter prepared in advance loses its texture and its juices. Ours are built at the moment, piece by piece, once the order is placed.

  • Crustaceans with substance

A glossy shell, firm flesh, a body that feels heavy in the hand: a brown crab or a langoustine tells you how fresh it is before it is even opened.

In tune with the catch

What goes into a Marseille seafood platter

A Marseille platter has no fixed recipe. It is written with whatever the coastline offers at the time: oysters, brown crab, prawns, whelks and langoustines come and go with the seasons and the daily catch.

That is also why it is meant to be shared. You set it in the middle of the table, open, dip, take your time — and the meal carries on naturally towards a grilled fish or a speciality of the sea if the appetite holds.

Sundays at Pointe Rouge

A restaurant open on Sunday, for the family platter

In Marseille, Sunday is still the day for a meal that lingers. L'Estéou welcomes you all day, from lunch through to dinner: we are open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to midnight, and only Monday is closed. On Sunday, the terrace facing Pointe Rouge suits family tables just as much as catch-ups with friends.

Around a seafood platter plated to order, a catch of the day or a wood-fired pizza, Sunday lunch takes its time facing the sea. As the table is in high demand that day, it is best to book ahead to choose your spot indoors or on the terrace.
